At their first appointment, the family met with a complete team of fetal and pediatric heart specialists, maternal fetal medicine experts, genetic counselors and other doctors to review and confirm Zanes diagnosis. Numerous doctors, nurses, technicians and other specialists provided the clinical care that saved Zane and Zekes lives.

Background:In 2021, our Comprehensive Stroke Center (CSC) in San Antonio (SA), Texas received 7 pediatric patients suffering from signs and symptoms of stroke. Stroke, Volume 55, Issue Suppl_1 , Page AWP47-AWP47, February 1, 2024. These patients ranged in age from 4-17 and approximately 57% were positive for an acute ischemic stroke (AIS).

Fetal cardiac intervention team included pediatric cardiology imaging specialist, fetal cardiology nurse practitioner, two interventional pediatric cardiologists, ultrasound radiologist, maternal-fetal medicine physician, fetal anaesthesiologist and maternal anaesthesiologist. Fetal demise occurred in about 8% of cases.

Alteplase remained on formulary for pediatric stroke and other diagnoses. Nurses were provided with dosing table and care instruction badge backers. All impacted disciplines received education, including nursing skills demonstration. The legal department approved as our new standard of care for AIS.
