Ultrasound – this is easily available, very portable and usually a very low risk investigation. Previously it was thought that this was only beneficial in 1 6 hour window, some studies are suggesting that it could be beneficial even if performed beyond 6 hours (up to 16 hours) The next step is to study the heart in detail.

As the heart becomes more muscular, it becomes stiffer and therefore does not fill with as much blood and therefore pumps less blood out. So what tests tell us about the heart as a pump? Echocardiography – We can use ultrasound to visualize the heart and look at how well it pumps.
