She's had multiple PCI procedures. She also has sick sinus syndrome (SSS) and intermittent high grade AV block for which she had a dual chamber pacemaker implanted. On the day of presentation she complained of typical chest pain, and stated it feels like prior MI.
You diagnose uncomplicated appendicitis in the ED. The on call General Surgery team wants to wait until the next morning to perform an appendectomy. Is your patient at risk for appendiceal perforation with a delay to surgery? Dr. Rohit Mohindra and Dr. Shelley McLeod analyze the latest RCT that attempts to answer this question, the PERFECT study, on this EM Cases Journal Club.
Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States. Currently, it accounts for nearly 30% of all new female cancers each year. For 2023, the American Cancer Society estimated that 297,790 new cases of invasive breast cancer would be diagnosed and about 43,700 women would die from breast cancer. Despite the high number of diagnoses, the death rate from breast cancer has been decreasing steadily in the US since 1989.

Key principles and approach to management of both non-massive and massive hemoptysis with Dr. Scott Weingart and Dr. Bourke Tillmann, who answer questions such as: What are the factors to consider in the decision to intubate patients with massive hemoptysis? How can one reliably distinguish hemoptysis from pseudohemoptysis? What is the evidence for tranexamic acid in patients with hemoptysis?
Allergic responses to common foods such as dairy and peanuts can increase the risk for heart disease and cardiovascular death as much or more than smoking, new research suggests. And these dangerous allergic responses can strike both people with food allergies and those with no obvious allergy symptoms.
It is no secret that the National Health Service (NHS) is currently screaming along in fifth gear just to stay on a country lane: and we haven’t yet reached the motorway that lies ahead. The NHS long-term plan couldn’t be more current, but it could perhaps have been more timely. 1 Successive governments have watched our population changing shape and ageing over the last 20 years, but a powerful response to that looming ‘motorway’ of healthcare demand has only now materialised.

Persistent cardiac arrhythmias are readily amenable to detection by performing a standard electrocardiogram (ECG), but detection of transient (paroxysmal) arrhythmias has long been a significant cause of frustration to both doctors and patients. Often a significantly symptomatic arrhythmia is experienced by the patient but terminates before an ECG can be recorded to allow diagnosis.
Statement Highlights: The new American Heart Association PREVENTTM risk calculator estimates the 10- and 30-year risk of total cardiovascular disease for people aged 30 years and older. The calculator estimates the risk of heart attack, stroke and —.
Objectives The advent of conversational artificial intelligence (AI) systems employing large language models such as ChatGPT has sparked public, professional and academic debates on the capabilities of such technologies. This mixed-methods study sets out to review and systematically explore the capabilities of ChatGPT to adequately provide health advice to patients when prompted regarding four topics from the field of cardiovascular diseases.
Until recently, healthcare professionals and patients mainly used physical media like CDs to share medical images. This method entailed burning the medical images onto a physical CD, which was then handed over or mailed to the recipient. This system was not without its merits. It was simple and in its own way, secure because the data remained offline, reducing the chances of unauthorized access.

The renal denervation race hit a major new milestone this week after Recor Medical’s Paradise system became the first to land FDA approval. Renal denervation (RDN) is intended for hypertension that can’t be controlled by conventional therapies, either due to ineffectiveness, side effects, or adherence issues RDN lowers blood pressure by denervating the sympathetic nerves surrounding renal arteries, reducing overactivity that can lead to hypertension Recor’s ultrasound-based Paradise System has b
Objective Electrode patch position may not be critical for success when cardioverting atrial fibrillation (AF), but the relevance of applied electrical energy is unclarified. Our objective was to perform a meta-analysis of randomised trials to examine the dose–response relation between energy level and cardioversion success by electrode position in elective cardioversion.

The fundamental characteristic of atherosclerosis is when a cholesterol particle becomes trapped in the artery wall. It is the inflammatory response to this particle retention that causes the formation of atherosclerosis 1. Think of it like a tennis ball passing through a net and getting stuck on the other side. Lipoprotein particles entering the subintimal space causing atherosclerosis.
Objectives Systemic inflammation is increasingly being recognised as a possible mechanism for acute arterial thrombotic events, including acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Despite this, there is conflicting data on the risk of ACS in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We performed a contemporary systematic review and meta-analysis to identify the risk of ACS in patients with IBD.
The field of cardiology is constantly changing, with new techniques and technologies emerging to enhance care. One such innovation is the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) which has the potential to revolutionize the treatment of valve disease by offering an invasive option compared to traditional open heart surgery. However becoming proficient in this state of the art procedure requires training and expertise which's exactly what the ADN CoE aimed to provide through their recent TA
In the United States, the healthcare industry is confronted with the intricate issue of workforce shortages , but a collaborative network of employers, educators, and healthcare partners such as NHA are actively engaged in working towards a solution. Background Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is frequently seen in association with arterial hypertension and indicates poor prognosis. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of LVH and associated factors in a multiethnic population from Mauritius. Methods Population-based health surveys were performed in 2009 and 2015 and included in total 8961 individuals aged 35–75 years with recorded 12-lead ECG.
In the complex web of our cardiovascular system, the arteries play a vital role in ensuring the smooth flow of blood from the heart to various parts of the body. However, when these arteries become narrowed or blocked conditions like Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) can emerge, posing a threat to our overall health. At AMS Cardiology we understand the significance of proactive care; that’s why we’ve put together this blog where we’ll explore the essential aspects of peripheral artery
Circulation, Ahead of Print. Background:The optimal approach to identify individuals with diabetes who are at high-risk for developing heart failure (HF) to inform implementation of preventive therapies is unknown, especially in those without atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD).Methods:Adults with diabetes and no HF at baseline from 7 community-based cohorts were included.
Research Highlights: Depression and anxiety may accelerate the onset of risk factors for increased heart attack and stroke, according to a Boston-based study. People with a higher genetic sensitivity to stress developed a cardiovascular risk factor at.
Background Peak oxygen pulse (O 2 pulse=oxygen consumption/heart rate) is calculated by the product of stroke volume (SV) and oxygen extraction. It has been shown to be reduced in patients with a Fontan circulation. However, in the Fontan population, it may be a poor marker of SV. We propose that the slope of the O 2 pulse curve may be more reflective of SV during exercise.
Stroke: Vascular and Interventional Neurology, Volume 3, Issue S2 , November 1, 2023. IntroductionVertebro‐vertebral arteriovenous fistula (VV‐AVF) is a rare vascular malformation with abnormal high flow shunt between extracranial vertebral artery and an adjacent vertebral vein plexus without intervening capillaries.1 While seen in both adult and pediatric populations, the majority of the VV‐AVFs seen in childhood are largely congenital, seen in the setting of connective tissue diseases such as
Dear Sirs, We read with interest the article by Yamamoto et al. , 1 regarding the distinct electrocardiographic (ECG) manifestations in a large primary spontaneous right-sided pneumothorax. We concur that physicians’ awareness of possible right-sided pneumothorax associated ECG manifestations remains insufficient and not well reported.
