Research Highlights: Nontraditional risk factors for stroke were significantly associated with the development of strokes in adults younger than ages 35 to 45. Migraine was the most important nontraditional risk factor for stroke among both men and.
A new analysis involving over 13,000 people has found changes to blood vessels in the brain that can increase the risk of stroke and dementia are common in people with a range of heart conditions, regardless of whether they have experienced a stroke.
Here we report a rare morphology of a cardiac fibroma in a child. A 2-year and 8-month-old toddler came for “chronic constipation” and was found to have a heart murmur on cardiac auscultation. Further transthoracic echocardiography suggested “a strong echogenic mass in the left ventricular wall, with some part of “a string of beads” in shape extending into left ventricle outflow tract”, which was atypical for either a tumor, thrombus or vegetation.
Nontraditional risk factors such as migraines are as important as traditional risk factors like high blood pressure for adults younger than ages 35-45, finds new study.

Researchers have uncovered two novel gene mutations that may be responsible for a rare blood disorder. The mutations are found on the GNE gene and impact an enzyme, also called GNE, that is involved in the synthesis of sialic acid and a process called sialylation, which is critical for brain development. The mutations were first identified in a pediatric patient with macrothrombocytopenia, also called a giant platelet disorder, because of the enlarged size of blood platelets.
This diagnostic study aims to develop and validate a simple new criterion, time to notch longer than 75 milliseconds in lead I on electrocardiography, to identify left bundle branch block based on electrophysiological studies of human patients.
COVID-19 is a respiratory disease. Yet, from the earliest days of the pandemic, the cardiovascular risks associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection were clear: individuals with severe cases of COVID-19 often died from cardiovascular complications, and those with pre-existing cardiovascular disease were more likely to have severe illness or die.
(MedPage Today) -- A Mendelian randomization study challenged the notion that red and processed meats can cause cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. (European Journal of Preventive Cardiology) The American Heart Association voiced its support.
Torsade de pointes (TdP) was not a rare arrhythmia in Israel during the 1970s–1980s as many patients, mainly with atrial fibrillation (AF), were treated with QT-prolonging antiarrhythmic drugs. We published several articles on the use of cardiac pacing and intravenous (IV) isoproterenol in patients who developed TdP from quinidine, disopyramide, or amiodarone.
Editorial Boards for JACC and JACC: Clinical Electrophysiology (JACC: CEP) will integrate their efforts to attract and publish the best electrophysiology (EP) content and produce the greatest patient impact, as one of the first initiatives of incoming JACC Editor-in-Chief Harlan M. Krumholz, MD, SM, FACC.
A deep-learning model based on a chest radiograph (CXR) for cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk (CXR CVD-Risk) predicts major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) beyond the clinical standard, according to a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
Sent by Tom Fiero, written by Pendell Meyers A man in his 50s presented with acute shortness of breath. Unfortunately we do not have access to the patients presenting vital signs. Here is his ECG: Original image, suboptimal quality Quality improved with PM Cardio digitization The ECG is highly suggestive of acute right heart strain, with sinus tachycardia, S1Q3T3, and T wave inversions in anterior and inferior with morphology consistent with acute right heart strain.
An increase in sedentary time from childhood is associated with worsening arterial stiffness, a surrogate for premature vascular damage, a new study shows. However, light physical activity could reduce the risk. The study was conducted in collaboration between Oxford University, the Universities of Bristol and Exeter, and the University of Eastern Finland, and the results were published in Acta Physiologica.
What are clinical outcomes among patients presenting with non–ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) and multivessel coronary artery disease (MVD) and undergoing immediate complete revascularization (ICR) compared to staged complete revascularization (SCR)?
Adults younger than 35 to 45 years old may have a higher risk of developing a stroke from nontraditional risk factors such as migraines than from traditional risks like high blood pressure. That's according to new research published today in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes.
The non-neuronal cholinergic system of the cardiovascular system has recently gained attention because of its origin. The final product of this system is acetylcholine (ACh) not derived from the parasympathetic nervous system but from cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, and immune cells. Accordingly, it is defined as an ACh synthesis system by non-neuronal cells.
In this analysis from the UK, the DDPS led to improved pathway management which also achieved lower service demand and smaller waiting lists for dermatologists.
We present an exceptional case of a 53-year-old female, initially misdiagnosed with fulminant myocarditis, but later correctly diagnosed with pheochromocytoma. The presentation of the patient included a spectrum of symptoms such as headache, chest discomfort, palpitations, and dyspnea, following the intake of Domperidone. Two weeks prior to admission, the patient had experienced episodes of diarrhea and a low-grade fever.
In this interview, Richard A. Chazal MD, MACC and Michael J. Blaha, MD, MPH discuss Prevalence of Aortic Valve Calcium and the Long-Term Risk of Incident Severe Aortic Stenosis.
Introduction This study evaluated the hypothesis that vascular aging (VA) reduces ventricular contractile function and mechanical efficiency (ME) using the left ventricular pressure-volume (PV) construct. Methods A previously published in-silico computational model (CM) was modified to evaluate the hypothesis in two phases. In phase I, the CM included five settings of aortic compliance ( C A ) from normal to stiff, studied at a heart rate of 80 bpm, and phase II included the normal to stiff C A
