Understanding genomic medicine for thoracic aortic disease through the lens of induced pluripotent stem cells

Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine

Thoracic aortic disease (TAD) is often silent until a life-threatening complication occurs. However, genetic information can inform both identification and treatment at an early stage. Indeed, a diagnosis is important for personalised surveillance and intervention plans, as well as cascade screening of family members. Currently, only 20% of heritable TAD patients have a causative mutation identified and, consequently, further advances in genetic coverage are required to define the remaining mole

Case Report: Sudden very late-onset near fatal PD1 inhibitor-associated myocarditis with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest after >2.5 years of pembrolizumab treatment

Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine

Introduction Immune checkpoint inhibitors have advanced the outcomes of many different types of cancer. A rare but extraordinarily severe complication of these agents resembles immune checkpoint inhibitor-related myocarditis, which typically occurs within the first few weeks after treatment initiation with a mortality of 25%–50%. Case report A 57-year-old woman had uneventfully received pembrolizumab for metastatic non-small cell lung cancer for over 2.5 years and was admitted after an out-of-ho

Predictor of A4-amplitude using preprocedural electrocardiography in patients with leadless pacemakers

HeartRhythm

Based on the historical studies of leadless pacemakers (LP), high atrio-ventricular synchrony (AVS) with mechanical sensing-based VDD pacing is largely influenced by A4-amplitude. A limited study investigated the predictors of A4-amplitude using clinical and echocardiographic parameters.

Weight loss from surgery or drug therapy reduces blood pressure

Nature Reviews - Cardiology

Nature Reviews Cardiology, Published online: 19 February 2024; doi:10.1038/s41569-024-01000-6 Two studies indicate that a reduction in body mass index as a result of either bariatric surgery or pharmacological therapy is associated with a blood pressure-lowering effect.

Case Report: A 42-year-old male with IABP developing multiple organ embolism and intestinal necrosis

Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine

We report a 42-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and subsequently underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for revascularization. The patient was transferred to the cardiac intensive care unit for intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) due to frequent malignant arrhythmia after PCI. Then the patient experienced the most severe complications of IABP, including multiple organ embolism and intestinal necrosis.

Drug-eluting stents for coronary artery disease in the perspective of bibliometric analysis

Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine

Drug-eluting stents (DES) play a crucial role in treating coronary artery disease (CAD) by preventing restenosis. These stents are coated with drug carriers that release antiproliferative drugs within the vessel. Over the past two decades, DES have been employed in clinical practice using various materials, polymers, and drug types. Despite optimizations in their design and materials to enhance biocompatibility and antithrombotic properties, evaluating their long-term efficacy and safety necessi

Potential options for reducing cardiotoxicity of anthracyclines

All About Cardiovascular System and Disorders

What are the potential options for reducing cardiotoxicity of anthracyclines? Anthracyclines are an important group of medications useful in the treatment of solid tumours and hematological malignancies. An important limitation is their potential cardiotoxicity which can cause heart failure at varying time intervals, even decades later. Some methods which have been used to prevent cardiotoxicity are longer infusion times, use of liposomal preparations, dexrazoxane, beta blockers and renin-angiot

Tropomyosin-troponin complex in inherited cardiomyopathies

HeartRhythm

The tropomyosin-troponin complex (TTC) regulates cardiac contractility by controlling cross-bridge attachments to actin filaments based on intracellular Ca2+ levels. TTC consists of tropomyosin (TPM), cardiac troponin-T (cTnT), cardiac troponin-I (cTnI), and cardiac troponin-C (cTnC). Pathogenic variants (mutations) in genes encoding these proteins (TPM1 [TPM], TNNT2 [cTnT], TNNI3 [cTnI], and TNNC1 [cTnC]) cause different cardiomyopathy types, including hypertrophic (HCM), dilated (DCM), or rest

The role of Atrioventricular Delay in Determining Right Ventricle Function with Left Bundle Pacing

We read with great interest the paper by Tian et al1 on the effects with left bundle branch pacing (LBBP) on RV function. The authors are to be congratulated on their study, which further adds to our understanding of LBBP. However, the authors did not report if the atrioventricular delay (AVD) was optimized for each patient. This is a key detail for interpreting these results.

Conduction System Pacing versus Biventricular Pacing in Heart Failure with Reduced Ejection Fraction: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

HeartRhythm

Conduction system pacing (CSP) has emerged as a promising alternative to biventricular pacing (BVP) heart failure patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and ventricular dyssynchrony, but its benefits are still uncertain. In this study, we aim to evaluate clinical outcomes of CSP versus BVP for cardiac resynchronization in patients with HFrEF.
