"A patient just arrived as a transfer for NSTEMI."

Dr. Smith's ECG Blog

Written by Willy Frick The OMI paradigm has taught me that any diagnosis of NSTEMI is cause for immediate evaluation. "A patient just arrived as a transfer for NSTEMI." I quickly reviewed the patient’s records and saw that she was a 53 year old woman with a history of BMI 40, but no other identifiable risk factors for coronary artery disease. Her first hsTnI at the referring facility was undetectable.

Prognostic impact of lung ultrasound detected B-lines on hospitalised ischaemic heart failure with mildly reduced ejection fraction patients

Open Heart

Objectives Prognostic impact of lung ultrasound-derived B-lines (LUS-BL) in heart failure with mildly reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (HFmrEF) patients remains elusive. We evaluated the correlation between LUS-BL and prognosis in HFmrEF patients. Methods This is a subgroup analysis based on our previously published retrospective study with 1691 HFmrEF patients.

Cardiac dysfunction in survivors of sepsis: a scoping review

Open Heart

Background Sepsis is associated with an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular events in a magnitude comparable to other major cardiovascular risk factors. Sepsis is one of the most common reasons for intensive care admission and survivors often have significant functional limitations following discharge. However, it is not clear to what extent chronic cardiovascular dysfunction might mediate these functional impairments, or how we might screen and manage these patients at risk of chronic card

Difference in tissue temperature change between two cryoballoons

Open Heart

Background Cryoballoon ablation, especially Arctic Front Advance Pro (AFA-Pro) (Medtronic, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA), has been widely recognised as a standard approach to atrial fibrillation (AF). Recently, Boston Scientific has released a novel cryoballoon system (POLARx). Despite comparable acute clinical outcomes of these two cryoballoons, the recent study reported a higher complication rate, especially for phrenic nerve palsy, with POLARx.

Nature Reviews - Cardiology

Nature Reviews Cardiology, Published online: 08 December 2023; doi:10.1038/s41569-023-00980-1 The use of intravenous levothyroxine does not increase the likelihood of hearts being transplanted from haemodynamically unstable, brain-dead potential donors, suggesting that current practice recommendations should be revised.

Sensing of concealed ventricular extrasystoles by pacemakers. Fifty years later

Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology

Abstract Whether a pacemaker can sense concealed ventricular extrasystoles still remains debatable since its occurrence was first proposed in 1972. It must remain a diagnosis of exclusion if it really exists. Isoelectric complexes and all the causes of oversensing especially discrete false signals generated by a defective pacemaker lead must be excluded before concealed ventricular extrasystoles can be postulated.
