Intravascular Imaging-Guided PCI Reaches a Turning Point With Survival, MI Benefits

Med Page Today

(MedPage Today) -- For the first time, intravascular imaging-guided coronary stenting was associated with better survival and reduced myocardial infarction (MI) in a meta-analysis powered to detect these benefits against angiography, researchers.

New study suggests target steps per day for reduced risk of heart failure

Science Daily - Heart Disease

In ambulatory women ages 63-99 years, higher amounts of usual daily light and moderate intensity activities were associated with lower risk of developing heart failure with preserved ejection fraction independent of demographic and clinical factors associated with heart failure risk. Accumulating 3,000 steps per day might be a reasonable target that would be consistent with the amount of daily activity performed by women in this study.

Systemic-to-pulmonary collateral flow associations with antegrade pulmonary flow in single ventricle patients: insights from cardiac magnetic resonance imaging

Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine

Purpose In the palliated single ventricle anomalies, a considerable amount of the aortic flow may be absorbed by the systemic-pulmonary collateral flow (SPCF), which can be noninvasively assessed by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). The aims of this study were to (1) identify factors associated with SCPF in pediatric single ventricle patients, and (2) establish a cutoff values indicating an association between SCPF and a reduction in antegrade pulmonary flow.

Role of ultrahigh-spatial-resolution photon-counting CT in assessment of coronary artery disease

All About Cardiovascular System and Disorders

I had posted about photon counting CT which converts X-rays directly to electronic signals unlike conventional CT which converts X-rays first to light and then to electronic signals. Direct conversion allows low energy photons to be differentiated from electronic noise. When data is acquired directly from photons of different energy levels, better contrast-to-noise ratio can be realized.

Physiological Resilience: A New Pillar of Endurance Exercise Performance (Part II of II)

Physiologically Speaking

Monday, in part I of this post, I introduced the concept of physiological resilience — the idea that the factors that determine endurance performance (e.g., critical speed) aren’t fixed, but variable, and that their variation is determined by our ability to withstand fatigue during exercise. 1 Our ability to maintain performance under the stress of fatigue — physiological resilience — may be the fourth dimension of endurance performance.
