Improvements in acute stroke treatment, including endovascular thrombectomy and critical care management, have increased survival rates after stroke. The chronic and evolving neurological consequences of stroke may offer viable targets for delayed treatment strategies to reduce risk of vascular dementia and neurodegenerative disease.
