Studies, including the MARC study, show that athletes have a higher proportion of calcified (stable) plaques and fewer mixed or non-calcified plaques, which are more prone to rupture and cause heart attacks. Athletes with this risk factor were at a far greater likelihood of severe coronary calcification.
