Zane had three openheartsurgeries before he turned 3. Zeke and Zane were both diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) before birth. As far as congenitalheartdiseases go, HLHS falls on the rarer end of the spectrum.
In the years to come, most procedures, in particular surgery for congenitalheart defects, were performed at US military hospitals in South Vietnam. After the US forces left the country, fewer than 10 open-heartsurgeries were done each year, due to widespread lack of supplies, devices, trained personnel, and funding.
