Operative therapy for cardiac arrhythmias: Setting the stage for catheter ablation

HeartRhythm

Notwithstanding many insightful observations, the electrocardiogram (ECG) arguably ignited the big bang in our understanding of cardiac arrhythmias. The development of electrophysiology (EP) studies through intravascular catheters provided the leap to verifying mechanisms, setting the stage for interventions.

Sotalol Dosing and Outcomes Among Patients Undergoing Intravenous Loading for Atrial Arrhythmias—A PEAKS Registry Substudy

Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology

Methods In the Prospective Evaluation Analysis and Kinetics of IV Sotalol (PEAKS) Registry, we analyzed outcomes among patients undergoing elective IV sotalol load for atrial arrhythmias (AT/AF). Results Among 163 total patients, 85 (52%) of patients underwent loading anticipating target oral dose of 80mg, compared with 78 (48%) for 120mg.

Computational Modeling of Effects of PKP2 Gene Therapy on Ventricular Conduction Properties in Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy

Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology

Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology, Ahead of Print. Evidence from experimental systems and patients indicates that ventricular myocytes inPKP2arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy have greatly reduced electrical coupling at gap junctions and reduced Na+current density.

An approach to fluoroless radiofrequency atrial fibrillation ablation

Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine

Atrial fibrillation is the most prevalent arrhythmia with a lifetime risk of nearly 30%. Additional advantages include providing electrophysiology lab personnel with a lead-free working environment and avoiding radiation exposure for both patients and physicians. It has initially been performed with fluoroscopic catheter guiding.

PO-05-169 ATRIAL ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL REMODELING AND ARRHYTHMIA SUSCEPTIBILITY IN A MIDDLE-AGED RABBIT MODEL

HeartRhythm

While AF arises in old age, the combined effects of widespread structural, electrophysiological and autonomic remodeling make it difficult to discern the exact mechanisms of arrhythmia generation. Investigation prior to overt structural remodeling may therefore be required.
